It has frustrated me that every web part that I develop is listed under Miscellaneous when we deploy it to production. I know this is a small thing but i believe it is important that these this are done correctly so that the company brand is recognized appropriately. Well I finally found the method to do it and have listed it here.

I will demonstrate this using the Staff of the Week WebPart that we have just developed.
The file we need to edit in this project is the StaffOfTheWeek.xml file.

By simply adding 3 elements our Web Part will be moved outside of Miscellaneous.
All we need to do is add 3 new elements: Group, Title, WebPartDescription so that the XML changes from this:

<Module Name="WebParts" List="113" Url="_catalogs/wp">
    <File Path="StaffOfTheWeek.webpart" Url="Revium.StaffOfTheWeek.webpart" Type="GhostableInLibrary"></file>
</Module>

To this:

<Module Name="WebParts" List="113" Url="_catalogs/wp">
    <File Path="StaffOfTheWeek.webpart" Url="Revium.StaffOfTheWeek.webpart" Type="GhostableInLibrary">
        <Property Name="Group" Value="Revium"></Property>
        <Property Name="Title" Value="Revium Staff Of The Week"></Property>
        <Property Name="WebPartDescription" Value="Revium Staff Of The Week."></Property>
    < /File>
</Module>>

And now you can see the Revium Group in the Add Web Part Dialog

This is another task that seemed to escape me for a long time. There is a list of Users (SPContext.Current.Web.Users) that we can access and look through but why aren’t their photos defined in this list? Well it turns out there is another hidden list which maintains this info.
